Which Camera Should I Get?

Okay all you photographers out there...I need your help. I've asked a few of my friends and I've narrowed it down to 3: Nikon D40, Nikon D40x, or Canon Rebel XTI. Which one? Do I pay the extra money for more fancy stuff or do I just stick with the basics and get a nice camera? I just don't know! This is my birthday gift to myself so I'm pooling all my birthday money to get it. I'm wanting to go get it in the next few weeks so I need some help! Please keep in mind that I am very very amatuer when it comes to photography and I'm trying to upgrade my 3.2 megapixel purse camera to something nicer. I guess I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my money if I go all out since I won't know what the heck half of the "fancy stuff" will do. I just want a great camera that will give me great quality picture and I won't have to know how to do too much to get it. I'm sure I could figure things out. I'm just wondering if it's worth it.

Oooh that is a tough choice, I think you would like any of those. Maybe you should go to Best Buy or any other place that sells them, and just play around with them for a while. Figure out what is is exactly that you want out of a camera and go from there. Good luck, you'll have to let me play with your new camera when you get it!

I have no input...except that I would love to know what you end up choosing and how you like it...sorry that I am no help!

I've liked my Nikon - it does what I need it to do. I would take the advice to do a "hands on" approack just to see how user friendly each camera is. Good luck!

I agree with going to the store.
I think, perhaps, you're getting a little more camera then you can handle. Unless you really want to learn a lot about photography and go off of auto mode and mess with your aperature, shutter speed, points of focus I'd go with a high MP camera with lots of optical zoom, with the option to mess with the aperature, etc. I am a Cannon girl, mostly becuase that's what all my friends have. The cameras you listed are a pain to carry around. I have a small camera that goes in the purse to events, just because the big camera is a lot to deal with (and sometimes I like to just click the camera and have the picture come-out nice, rather then worry about a lot of stuff). BUT, I do love my rebel. :)

I have a Nikon D50 (digital SLR). It is a GREAT camera but a pain in the butt to carry around everywhere because it's so big.

A few months ago I bought the Canon Powershot (very tiny) which I also love. It takes fabulous pictures and it will fit in your purse. I definitly recommend getting something smaller since you will probably tote it everywhere like I do.

I got a Canon Rebel XT in June for my bday and I love it. I basically use it as an expensive point-and-shoot camera right now, but I love the pictures it takes - so much better than my 4 mp one. I went to Best Buy and took pictures with the Canon and with the Nikon D40 and I liked the Canon better. I think they're both great. I've also read a lot of reviews and that's why I got the XT instead of the XTi cause I don't know that it's worth the extra money.

I have the Canon Rebel XTI and I love it. I am saving up for a new lens, though, because the one it comes with is pretty basic. Like everybody esle said, it is pretty bulky to carry around- I find myself still using my little 3.2 megapixel canon powershot a lot just because of convenience. I still have so much to learn about the XTI- it is very, very fun, though!

2 words: Canon! Canon!

I seriously love the feel of the Canon over the Nikons. The Canon feels like a "real" camera, with no lag time when you push the shutter to when the camera takes the picture. The Nikon to me feels a little too "Computerized", if that makes any sense... Probably not...
