Frenectomy

That is the procedure that poor little Maxwell had at the doctor today. Sounds pretty crazy, but it really wasn't too bad. Basically, his frenulum, the little piece of skin that holds your tongue down, was attached all the way to the tip of his tongue (hence the term "tongue tied"). Some babies don't feed very well with it attached and later in life they develop speech problems. Max has been gaining weight just fine so I wasn't too worried about that, but he has had a lot of problems with swallowing air when he eats and then being extremely fussy and not sleeping too well. So I took him in today to see what the doctor wanted to do. She didn't think his tongue was the biggest culprit for our problems, it's acid reflux. So now we're putting him on Prevacid and elevating his mattress. We did clip his tongue though just in case it was contributing to the problem and to prevent any possible issues with his speech when he gets older. The procedure was pretty quick and very little blood was involved just a little clip and he was done. It was also good to see how much he weighed since it eased my mind that his feeding issues weren't causing any problems. He basically gained over a pound in a little over a week! At his last appointment on October 2nd, he was 8 lbs 3 oz and this appointment he was 9 lbs 9 oz. Not bad, little guy! The doctor said it will take a week or two to see results from the medication so hopefully I'll be getting a little bit more sleep at night and little Maxwell's painful moments will end.

C had acid reflux, BAD. He would SCREAM about 2 minutes into a bottle and was unable to finish. I spent WEEKS trying to figure it out and then I finally told my pedi I wanted some tagamet. It was honesly instant relief for us. I remember we were in the parking lot at Albertsons and he took a bottle for the first time without screaming, I almost cried. :)

Brittany---it's like we are living parallel lives!! I just got a frenectomy done yesterday! Crazy huh? (my frenectomy was done on the skin between my bottom lip and gums). I am in a TON of pain today, and I thought I'd pass out from the pain yesterday; so be really good to Maxwell because I'm sure he's feeling like me!
Also, as I had posted on my blog a few days ago, we just uped Masen's Zantac again--his reflux gets so bad he won't eat or sleep too.
I can empathize with all of your woes!

No way! My little Jarom was really tongue-tied. He wasn't gaining weight, swallowed a lot of air, and was having all sorts of problems- and two different doctors said they wanted to wait and see if he'd grow out of it! I was so mad. I finally went straight to a pediatric ENT who totally agreed with me and did the frenectomy- and it helped SO much. I'm glad you got it done while he's so little and it's all over! (With all the doctor-hopping Jarom was four months before he had it done). And I hope the reflux issues resolve soon- poor little guy! He is way cute. You're such a cute mom!

Oh, I hope you'll see results quickly. Thank goodness for modern medicine! Hopefully it won't be long before you can get some more sleep at night! Hang in there.

Do you happen to have my baby Addison living at your house? With the 10,000 things that went wrong with having Addie she was also tongue tied and had acid reflux. It was so hard to nurse her. Things did get so much better once she had it clipped. I so understand where you are at right now and it will get better.

London had reflux and it was so bad - they finally put her on Zantac (I don't know why they had to wait so long) but when they finally did she was a different baby!!! Bless modern medicine because we all need our sleep :) By the way he is SO cute - your kids are beautiful!

checked out the photo site and am absolutely green eyed because there is no one out here (in desert small-ville) who takes pics this well that I'm aware of. I'm going to give it the old college try.
sounds like your little guy's gaining weight wonderfully, despite everything in his way. what a dedicated little man!! :0) hopefully he'll push forward with the gospel as well as his food!
