What Is In Your Nose?!

That is what I have been saying to Ethan at every meal this week! He's been stuffing any sort of food up there whenever he can. So far he's had ham, oatmeal, granola bar, apple, pancake, meatloaf, and crackers up there. I can handle getting food out, but I don't if it would be easy if he starts putting small toys up there. It seems like he gets it up there so far and then he sneezes and all the food comes out. The other day he was playing in the toy room and he had a huge sneeze and all this cracker comes shooting out of his nose! He had a cracker for a snack about 5 minutes earlier and I guess he got bored with it and wanted to see if he could save it for later. Who knows what is going through his mind when he does it?! So any ideas on how to get him to stop? I've tried watching him to catch him in the act and tell him no no and then make him blow his nose, but it doesn't seem to get through. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

K, lock me up and throw away the key -- but this is what I would do. If I see him putting food up his nose, I would give his hand a hard squeeze, or even a tiny slap if the squeeze doesn't seem to do it. Putting food up his knows can be potentially dangerous, and more likely you'll have to take him to the doctor to get whatever it is out someday. I would also very sharply say NO at him. Look angry and like you mean it. Then, say no, we do not put things up our nose. And let it go. I bet if you do that a couple of times he'll get the idea and stop... or maybe he won't... :)

I know it is something you want him to stop, but mike and I couldn't stop laughing when I read the list of things he had up his nose! What a nice casserole that would make:)

Hi there. My wife and I are having the same problem with our daughter stuffing food and tissue paper up her nose every chance she gets. She is 21 months, and has ALWAYS had a thing with her nose. She always takes an edge of her blanket and sniffs it. So we figure she has some type of nose fettish! lol.

Anyhow - I tried to google the whole BABY+NOSE+FOOD thing to find out what if anything everyone else is experiencing and I found your post and your post only!

Have you had any success in getting your child to stop? Has there ever been a need to seek medical attention because of anything stuffed up there? That's easily our greatest concern - her sticking something in the nose that doesn't break down easily or sneeze out.

Thanks for any help,

David

We found that he would try to stick things up his nose when his nose was runny or stuffy. He was trying to figure out how to make it stop. I guess food or random objects were fair game for him. Our doctor told us to be very firm with him and if he stuffed stuff up his nose then we were to remove him from the situation and let him know that it is not good to put things up his nose. He eventually stopped and we never had to take him to the doctor to remove anything. Thankfully!
